Recommended Typing Equipment

If you type a lot (which this day in age you probably do) then it is well worth having the right equipment to avoid injury while maximizing your performance.

Using a bad setup probably won't send you to the ER but the pain and symptoms can get severe. Here is a case of RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) so serious they were unable to open doors for 6 months!

Ergonomic is the key word - look for products that conform to your body. Comfort and lots of adjustability is key.

A great computer typing setup should focus on maximizing ergonomics in the following four products:

  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Keyboard Tray
  • Chair

Important Note! If you're looking for the biggest bang for your buck (only investing in one of these items) I would recommend at least getting a good adjustable keyboard tray. This allows for the most customization and adjustability and will probably make up for any short-comings in other areas.

Here are some suggestions as a guide to purchasing the right equipment for your computer typing setup.

  • The Keyboard!

    1. Best Overall - Logitech K350 Wireless Wave Ergonomic Keyboard

I've had this exact keyboard for over 10 years.
      Pros
      1. Ergonomic! (Great wrist support PLUS keys are slightly curved relieving pressure in wrist)
      2. Lots of functional/programmable keys
      3. Reliable
      4. Great Price
      Cons
      1. A little large
      2. Average speed
      3. Not the best wireless range
    2. Extra Ergonomic Alternative - Cloud Nine C989M Ergonomic Mechanical Keyboard

Interesting ergonomic alternative for wrist variation. I have not tried this, but basically infinite wrist adjustability would be key for wrist and/or shoulder issues.
      Pros
      1. Extremely adjustable for wrist positioning on keyboard
      2. High build quality
      Cons
      1. Pricey
    3. Other Keyboards to Consider

  • Mouse

    1. Best Overall - Logitech M510 Wireless Computer Mouse

Another product I can vouch for since I have also used this mouse for over 10 years without a hitch.
      Pros
      1. Ergonomic! (Contoured to fit hand grip comfortably)
      2. Good amount of programmable buttons
      3. Reliable
      4. Great Price
      Cons
      1. Wireless range on the shorter side
    2. Extra Ergonomic Alternative - Logitech MX Vertical Wireless Mouse

While there are a bunch of ergonomic mice to choose from this one seemed to be the best for the most people.
      Pros
      1. Allows mouse hand to rest in a more natural neutral position (handshake position)
      2. Good amount of programmable buttons
      Cons
      1. Pricey
    3. Other Mice to Consider

  • Height-Adjustable Keyboard Tray

    1. Best Overall - 3M Sit/Stand Keyboard Tray (AKT170LE)

I have been using this keyboard tray for over 6 years. It is a fantastic keyboard tray and gives tons and tons of adjustability. The tray can basically be any height - even tall enough to stand at for a sit-stand workstation. It can come out from your desk quite far, and it allows for postive and negative tilt. If you are going to spend a lot of time in front of a computer I highly highly suggest investing in one of these.
      Pros
      1. All kinds of ergonomic!
      2. Tons of adjustability
      3. Reliable/well-made
      4. Sit/stand capable
      Cons
      1. Not cheap
      2. Sit/stand only for your keyboard and mouse
    2. Other Keyboards Trays to Consider

  • Office Chair

    1. Best Overall - Alera Mesh High-Back Multifunction Chair (ALEEL41ME10B)

I have used this chair for over 8 years and my wife has had hers for about 3 years now. This chair offers a lot of adjustability and has a ridiculously comfortable seat cushion. I haven't tried every chair in the world, but this is the only chair so far that I can sit in the whole day without being sore. Key features here are an adjustable height as well as adjustable armrests.
      Pros
      1. Ergonomic - seat and armrest height adjust plus lumbar
      2. Seat is freakishly comfortable
      3. Reliable
      Cons
      1. Not cheap
    2. Other Office Chairs to Consider
